This is my favorite formation in Carlsbad Caverns. I had to ask what its name is and even the Rangers didn't know. Finally as each Ranger asked another, one finally commented that the name is unofficial, but it is referred to as the Guardian of the Domes since it stands at the entrance to the dome room.

This is a HDR version of this www.flickr.com/photos/samurai_cat/198504169/in/set-721575... photo, the multiple exposures bring out more detail in the shadows. Yes I played around with many exposures on the first day.

Windy Slope Cave, WV. This was taken near the upstream terminus of the cave. The stream emerges from beneath massive collapse that pours out air. We finished the survey on this trip. The cave taped out at 1983 feet.

Rockeater Pit is a 155 foot (47 meter pit) that is difficult to find. There is a small ledge towards the bottom that prevents it from being freefall the whole way. It is difficult to see but Tabby is holding a nice rat snake we rescued from the bottom.

This image was taken from the sloping ledge about 100 feet (30 meters) down. I combines natural light which is greenish with light from a strobe which I used to paint the walls toward the camera position. Poor Brian held still for 13 seconds which is not easy. When I exited the ledge from Brian's position I did a rather scary pendulum over the remainder of the pit with three pelican boxes and a tripod dangling.

I took this image in the process of placing srobes to light the pit. At this point I had a single slaved Vivitar 285 with the face extended directly below Brian. Brian is holding a slaved Sunpak 383. The shutter was opened for less than a half second and I used a hand held Canon flash to illuminate the foreground. Normally I discard the setup images but I kinda liked this one so I posted it. Brian is around 40 feet (12 meters) from the bottom.
